Catch 22


Introduction
Catch 22 is privately owned employment agency with offices in London and Leeds. Catch 22 was established in 1982, and supplies all grades of facilities support staff and services to companies across the UK. The company can supply temporary staff for a few hours or a long-term contract, or permanent staff via recruitment and executive head-hunting.


Problem
Catch 22 has an attractive website but had no means to easily advertise the positions available within it. The company has an internal network and a dynamic database of vacancies and other related data. They wanted to be able to create an interface between their non web-enabled database and their existing website.

The agency, in their desire to leverage the possibilities of the Internet to the full, also wanted to offer a "Curriculum Vitae Builder" for those candidates without a CV, along with a file store into which candidates could upload their existing CV if available.

Solution
First we designed a detailed specification with Catch 22. Then we studied their internal database and extensively documented the database schema. From there, we were able to create a sophisticated and powerful application to fulfill all of Catch 22's requirements, and more:


Public Website Features
  • Our application provides a direct link, from a secure web page, between Catch 22's clients and their internal database. The client could now post his vacancies directly into Catch 22's database - even outside of office hours
  • Candidates can register with the agency and post their CV's directly into a secure data store
  • Candidates without a CV can create one online in a simple, step-by-step process
  • Vacancies are pulled from Catch 22's internal database and published on to their website in real time
  • A powerful search engine, with a wide range of filtering mechanisms, allows candidates to search for contract or permanent positions, by salary range, hourly rate, category, location or by keywords - or with any combination of these filters
  • Candidates can "subscribe" to the database, whereupon they will be emailed automatically when new vacancies are available that match their requirements
Administration Features
  • Access log analysis provides reports covering page access, geographical positioning and server analysis (load, performance, etc)
  • Comprehensive file management suite: Hundreds of uploaded CV's need careful organisation and powerful searching tools. Because the data is sensitive (personal information) these files need to be secured and access to them must be controlled and monitored
  • The "back office" provides a collection of other tools for controlling the operating environment and the interface to Catch 22's internal database
